By Myra Berger

The amount of commercial renovation Washington DC is experiencing is just short of amazing. From exterior window and railing improvements to major interior make over projects the end result is spectacular. In addition a lot of historical buildings are seeing renewed life through new window treatments that are being installed.

Many buildings are having updated glass placed to increase over the all energy savings. As part of this ongoing process the historical buildings in the city are receiving glass replacements that are exact replicas of the original glass enclosures. Many store front properties are upgrading in an effort to increase the buildings appeal and equity.

Some of the interior remodeling jobs that are going on in the city involve major upgrades to existing buildings. One such job is where a company headquarters underwent a complete makeover by having their buildings connected and made into one. In order for this to be accomplished two additional floors were constructed along with a walkway that connects the buildings. Aluminum side lights were installed that run the length of the open areas creating a pleasant warm feeling.

Another notable interior project involved the implementation of stonework in many difficult installments. Due to available space the project required some intricate merging techniques of different materials. Included in the design was a curved wall that was covered in stone that had to meld into existing drywall. The overall finished project is quite beautiful.

Built in 1923 one building was witness to a rebirth of sorts. This building was remodeled inside out from top to bottom in an effort to bring it up to modern times and also retain its original appeal. The exterior underwent a face lift with the roof being replaced the stone facades and bricks being redone and a new outside ladder installed.

When a college bought an existing from a telecommunications company the interior was not what they had in mind. So a private contracting firm was called upon to come in and completely gut the existing interior of the building and perform a major remodel project. The end result was a transformed interior that included private offices and a data center to name a few of the improvements.

A remodel project that was performed for the Swedish embassy had all the materials shipped in directly from Sweden and used Swedish techniques for the installations. Custom walls, doors and ceiling panels all constructed of birch provide for a bright and modern looking space. Included in the remodel project is a custom access door in the public corridor that allows for the communication, data and electrical lines are not interfered with at all.
