What makes a great leader?

By Heather Austen

A number of qualities must be possessed by great leaders to ensure that those who follow them continue to do so. They must instil confidence and trust in them through demonstrating the qualities their followers wish to see. Optimism is one of the key qualities of a great leader as through possessing it they can be passed on to those who need it. Those around a great leader cannot believe in a cause if they cannot do so themselves and so optimism is an essential quality.

Confidence is another vital quality of great leaders however it mustn't be confused with arrogance. There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance and surpassing this line can cause unrest and tension within a group. A leader who possesses confidence passes it on to those around them and for a group, party or organisation this helps them become a more powerful force.

Modesty goes hand in hand with the quality of confidence. A great leader does not let their own achievements give them the idea that they are superior to others. A modest leader treats others as they would wish to be treated themselves. A modest leader is more approachable for their peers.

Decisions are based on knowledge rather than taking unnecessary risks as great leaders are calm and calculated. These qualities as well as maintaining successful results ensure leaders do not put those around them in dangerous or difficult positions. A great leader stays calm, calculated and composed to make the best choice for those they are speaking for when a time comes where they might need to make a difficult decision or be in a difficult situation.

A great leader must possess a number of qualities but those mentioned previously are vital ones. It is a leader's role to speak and make decisions for people and they must gain and maintain the confidence and support of those people through the above qualities. Even in very difficult times a leader must not show if they are uncertain as it is reflected with uncertainty in others.
