Different Types Of Youth Ministry Outreach

By June Misraje

When it comes to working with youth and teenagers, it's easy to see that they embrace the challenge of working with and assisting those who are in need. There are a couple different types of youth ministry outreach. They are missions and community outreach.

For the mission field there are three kinds to consider. They are local, regional, national and global. It's wise to start with local missions first then work your way up to global. Your cost and expenses will increase as you move from one mission area to another because of travel, food and lodging.

Local mission projects may include working and volunteering in food or soup kitchens. These services are typically offered every day of the week and serving three meals a day. Another one is working in homeless shelters. There are always duties and jobs that need done here.

Regional and national based missions generally include going into urban neighborhoods in large cities. Projects like mobile vacation bible school, arts and crafts and games are good when working with kids. Soup kitchens and homeless shelters are always an option too, they are just on a bigger scale.

Global missions is much more involved and takes much more planning and preparation. Usually you visit third world and underdeveloped countries. Passports and vaccinations are required. Projects include working in schools, vacation bible schools, helping to build or tear down buildings and many other things to meet sometimes just basic needs of the people.

Community outreach projects are ones that you can do in a day, around your local town. Rake leaves, shovel snow from driveways, mow lawns, paint porches, visit the sick and elderly and care for widows. These are all examples of things you can do with your youth teams. Most of the time you can simply mention that you are planning something, anything, and teenagers jump in with everything they have to offer!
