Animal Firm: Learn To Create Your Own High Performance Team

By Dr. A. de Waal and M. Schreurs

The concept of animal firm is based on a book called Animal Farm, written by Orwell. This classic reading piece talked about how various animals took on different roles. These roles can also be applied to the world of business. In his book, pigs were the boss. The idea of Animal firm is taken directly from the book's concept. High performance organizations and high performance teams are constructed from the the book and storyline. Surprisingly we discovered that typical dumb geese, barking dogs and tactless elephants actually perform better than thought. In the past, it was thought that the only way to motivate a group was to dangle bonuses at them and organized deadlines. Studies have proven that it is actually other factors that play a role.

How can animal behavior be mimicked in the business world? How can an animal world be controlled properly? The truth is, it is fairly simple. If you take a trip to a safari and observe the 5 clever animals and their behavior, then you will learn how to create your own high performance teams!

The five main animals:

1. The Elephant

The oldest and most experienced elephant is the leader of the group. This person may act as the manager of the group. They will show refined leadership skills and help to guide the rest of the herd or group. Other people will follow the lead and learn from the expertise of the leader. In a safari group, it is the main leader that decides for the rest of the group. They will decide on when the team stops for a drink or a rest, what they say everyone follows and does as well. The way that an animal group works and a team may be the same. With the older guiding and leading the younger group and generations.

A manager role may have many functions. The role of a successful leader will have the trust of their team. When they are able to role model proper behavior and choice making, they can look into the future using long and well planned out goals.

2. The Perfect African Wild Dog

This particular animal has been seen in nature to motivate the rest of the group. They want their team mates to be successful and will use encouragement and advice to push everyone to the top. The older of the group will coach the younger ones and highlight how the longer of the goals are more important than short term tasks.

Long-term continuity always comes before short-term profit to a successful manager. This manager creates a safe and stable work environment. The long-term mindset focuses on all interested parties of an organization: customers, society, suppliers, employees, the government, social groupings - everyone benefits.

3. The Ant

When an ant makes a mistake, they take that opportunity to learn from each other and help each other to prevent it from happening again. They can process non verbal communication skills and work well together using various methods. Knowledge is always shared and information exchanged between group members. The ant colony will have a leader, which is typically the one that knows the most about something important.

The role of the HPO manager is to help everyone learn from their mistakes and help each other grow. The encouragement that comes from a leader source could be enough to get a group through many difficult tasks and challenges.

4. The Crow and the Titmouse

There are some key words to live by; simplify, improve and innovate. Using the titmouse and the crow as an example, these animals have clever ways of seeking out solutions to problems. They can create and innovate when they need to. In most cases their ideas are so unique and rare, that they excel beyond the rest. When they learn something new and interesting they always share their findings with their team. The titmouse knows how to give off power and the crow will work on creative means in order to perform. Those characteristic traits can be used in people at work. When people are curious about their environment and seek new ideas, great things can happen.

A successful HPO manager always has employees strive to obtain the optimal result and to get the best out of themselves, their colleagues and the organization. This type of manager ensures a distinctive strategy and has everyone contribute to improving, simplifying and coordinating processes, services and products.

5. On the Savannah there is the; wildebeest, giraffe, ostrich and zebra

It may be crucial to group together a flock of animal personalities. Animals such as the wildebeest, giraffe, zebra and ostriches may be prone to follow each other and stay in tight groups. These groups may have flaws when predators come around. These predators will look for any personality that is lagging behind, they will look for the weak and the troubled and try to lure them from the group. That is why it is crucial to ensure that company workplaces stick together and even look out for each other. Creating a diverse range of personality types and keeping them tightly together, could help to eliminate the worry about predators.

An interesting manager will ensure that diverse teams have been organized on each business level.
