Fire Safety - Advice And Steps

By Latasha S. Cho

Fire is one of the leading causes of home injury as well as related deaths within a community. They take away property as well as the lives of so many people. Fire prevention should be followed to avoid accidents within the community.

Keep wood and other flammable materials away from your fireplace. Make sure that the metal protective cover is in place before you start the fire to keep children away from the fireplace.

Repair loose cords from your appliances. If you can, replace them to be sure that there will be no accidents. It will only take a spark from these loose cords to cause enough fire to burn down your home.

If you can, try not to smoke indoors. Throw cigarette butts at the right place and make sure that they are out before you throw them away or else there might still be an amber that can cause fire.

Inform the entire family about your plans when fire happens. Agree to stay calm in case of fire inside the home and plan an escape route. Practice drills if you can.

If you plan on grilling, make sure that it is ten feet away from your house or any flammable materials. Keep the children away from the grill even after you are done grilling as there are still fire causing materials left inside the grill.

Have a professional clean your kitchen especially your stove and other heating materials to avoid mishaps and cause fire. Make sure that your appliances are checked first before you use them again and that they are still good to use.

Lastly, to avoid further destruction of your home from fire, install a fire detector within the confines of your kitchen. Fire detectors will signal fire officials to your location and put the fire out for you.
