Conflict management, motivating employees and collaboration are the key to succeed in any enterprise and workers who can work jointly can often mean the difference between failure or success. By making good friends with co-workers it can reduce competition for the appreciation of the boss and help allay just about any suspicion that you are going to stab the other people in the back to further your own career. Being friends does not necessarily mean going out to dinner and having family picnics inside the park together, however it will indicate that at work, a mood of cooperation can go far to show that you along with your friends hold the best interests of the company at heart.

There are often times when you fall behind in your work and with friends in the office, they may be more tempted to guide you over a couple of rough spots than if you treat them as adversaries in the workplace. They will even be more amenable to arrive at your defense in case a project is not finished exactly right.

On the other hand, you will need to repay them in kind, by covering for them while they are on holiday or they require assistance with a project where they are engaged. The tough part will come in when the friendship surpasses the limitations in the office. In case for whatever reason the people develop a dislike for each other while participating in a task outside the office, it might have damaging impact on their office demeanor.

While friendships among co-workers on the same level in the pecking order are generally tolerable, it is never a good idea to attempt to be friends with the boss. Other people may see this as an effort to cozy up to the boss and when the boss does become friends with an underling, it might prompt allegations of favoritism. Any one who supervises others should not commence a friendship beyond work with a person who reports directly or indirectly to them.

Conflict management tactics are important in motivating employees in case a friendship grows between two people on the same rung in the corporate ladder, they should keep in mind the possibility of one being promoted to higher position and understand the friendship will most likely be in complicated consequently. It can really cause a friendship to become strained if one is appointed as the other's boss on a short-term basis, as there could be attempts to take advantage of the friendship to obtain special considerations. Whenever one is promoted over the other, whatever they say, there will probably be hard feelings directed at the one with the new position. Romantic friendships within an office rarely work out, and when they break up it can result in unpleasant results for them as well as for their co-workers. Friendships also could work out in the office, provided they are maintained on a professional level.
